New painting

My Dream with You – Acrylic on wood 32 x 24,8 cm January 2010
yes, after a mural i did about half a year ago. i thought the pose deserved a painting of its own. it is part of the Icons II series that can be viewed here. all titled in Spanish and as to settings very different from the first. Cuba inspired of course.
01.5.10Expositie Ketelhuizen/Bunkers

There you go

my first spoken word CD and i’m very pleased with it. the print is not exactly as planned, though, as it turned out the machine couldn’t handle all-black. the CDs get glued together and we certainly didn’t want that. so at the last minute we had to change the design into a negative – meaning the above. normally not really a problem, but before we figured out where all options were hid in these black holes of software, trying to give it a bit more body: bummer! i was afraid the amount of white would drown the text, but in the end it even looked better and turned out more appropriate to the concept.
so grab a bite, have a taste. chew thoroughly! to order and for a free MP3 download as well as a PDF with lyrics, visit my website here. the local recordshop Sounds will be distributing it as well. so let me know what you think of it, okay? headphones or loud volume kindly advised. many many thanks to all friends involved!

Almost there
what started out as a tryout about two and a half years ago, resulted in a about to be released CD with thirteen tracks. thirteen poems, to be exact. about twenty-four minutes of English poetry which will bear the same name as my last book: Indigo Blue and Red Impact. originally they were intended to be released simultaneously, but things didn’t work out as i had planned.
the objective was to record and mix the spoken words as diverse as possible. some of them are accompanied by especially arranged electronic music, and some are left as bare as can be. there’s a Cuba-related poem which has lots of live percussion and a trumpet giving it a grand finale, but the majority of them have soundscapes as a background. these soundscapes were recorded in my hometown on different locations; cars rushing over the bridge, people yapping and walking along, a gypsy playing his accordion, the carillon singing in the center of town, a call for Friday’s prayer at a mosque, and shrieking crows near the breathing river.

needless to say i got tremendous help from a friend of mine who has a small recording studio at home, and is also a talented drummer and percussionist. i didn’t touch any instrument used on this CD, not even the bass. i only did the words, recorded the soundscapes and gave instructions.
the first batch will have 100 spray painted covers made of cardboard, keeping it low-budget and simple. let’s see what kind of response there’ll be first, and where it’ll eventually take me. besides, a free MP3 download will be available through my website as well, along with a PDF file containing the poems which didn’t appear in the book, by the way. anyone interested and wanting to pre-order? mail me: obrasdelalma(at)yahoo.es

JEDEM DAS SEINE
bacteriën, virussen
parasieten, schimmels
krioelen
beschadigen
infecteren
smeer, vuil, jeuk
verderf in stand houdend, kokhalzend
opgevreten van binnen
een langdurige
doodsstrijd
ik krijg er een kampgevoel van
flitsen van Birkenau
scharminkels
skeletten
ribben tellen
schedels die hard weerklinken
op een betonnen vloer
‘EINE LAUS
DEIN TOD’
zo ken ik er nog wel een paar
die gasten moeten toch wel
hard hebben gelachen
om hun eigen kronkels
’s avonds laat
na het verdelen van
de dagelijkse buit
achter bier, schnaps und
wein
elk recht op leven
is een vrijbrief tot doden
oorlog is een leerschool
geniet er van
zolang je kunt
snuif de lucht op
adem in, diep
inhaleer
vergeet geen detail
ik heb er staan pissen
tegen een barak
geen achtergrond met referenties
geen sterrenhemel met beloftes
niks beschermheiligen
niks reputaties
bewijs je maar
nu!

07.16.09Mural two
well, they’re expecting guests and everybody’s putting everything in order frantically. i stopped by to hang my poem on the wall and leave, but it seems there still is some finalizing to do: i’m a perfectionist regarding this kind of thing.

i didn’t paint much in the room itself, i wanted to keep it as quiet and harmonic in color as possible; meaning pretty much the absence of it in an abundance of white. it’s a small room on the upper floor that deserves a peaceful solitude.

i like this figure myself a lot, hanging midair asleep. it adds to the peacefulness. i probably will use it more often when required. depending the number of people that are staying, the bunk bed can be lifted, so i had to take the height into account before painting it – which worked splendidly.

the double bed still has to be put in place: the angel is watching overhead. doors of shower and toilet need coating but that’s no longer a concern for me. overall i wanted the room to have an organic feel, a bit spartan perhaps but with a certain warmth. as the ceiling is of raw timber, i chose terracotta tiles for the floor. there’s a small window on the right which has a clear view for hundreds of yards.

the shower and toilet have chequered light and dark blue tiles, reflecting the figure’s striped uniform. a thin line of white and blue finishes it off. why that wasn’t done yet in the shower, i have no clue. deadlines elsewhere, i guess. and yes, it says Latrine and Brausebad above. you can figure out yourself where that comes from.

so there you go: i would have liked it as a bedroom or a study myself. sorry for the not so good pics. with a flashlight the colors always fuck up – hence why i never use it -, and because of the size of the room my camera couldn’t capture all. maybe someone else will someday.

this poem will be hung in the room i designed for newly built castle ‘De Berckt’, and that i hopefully will finish this week. i got one – small - mural to go. i’m not sure, though, when the room will be furnished, although they already planned having guests in two weeks. i’ll be out of town myself, so unable to make pics right away.

nearby they’re building a large… well, i wouldn’t call it a hotel as it isn’t. you can’t stay there on your own or as a couple. it’s only meant for groups: conventions, presentations, parties etc. the pic above is taken from the back. in addition - behind the camera’s view - there’s a lawn just as big as the lot you see in front, and then there’s a second building – an old castle and later monastery - with a pond and connected moat behind the trees.

this is the main hall, one of two on the first floor, but at the front - on the right – they will build an even bigger one three times as large. it is situated in a very peaceful, rural area located near the river. much of the material used is second-hand or are leftovers from construction and demolition sites.

a couple of dozen artists were asked to fill a panel in the hall and at the same time to design one of thirty-two rooms located on the second and third floor; meaning painting the walls, choosing the tiles etc. to be done in collaboration with the builders that are working there of course. some of the artists i know, most i don’t. much freedom is granted and there isn’t really a deadline although it is planned to be ready in july.

‘you and me’, 160 x 96 cm.
i hadn’t painted in almost three years. all icons i made so far were small and on wood, but making this one really gave back the motion of creating. painting calmes me down in an noble way, like a robust barge pushing water. the effect is that during the process doors open – energetically in all ways.
part II will follow…
03.24.09WINDSTIL – Tajiri’s Ronin
Van half mast tot
gestutte aarde.
Een krijgers symfonie.
Een traan, een snik
een schouderklop.
Ons heil ligt bij
dode helden.
Met goed fatsoen
sneuvelen ter
ere van meerderen.
Een pisgoot walhalla.
Geef ze te vreten
en een illusie.
