Mural two

well, they’re expecting guests and everybody’s putting everything in order frantically. i stopped by to hang my poem on the wall and leave, but it seems there still is some finalizing to do: i’m a perfectionist regarding this kind of thing.

i didn’t paint much in the room itself, i wanted to keep it as quiet and harmonic in color as possible; meaning pretty much the absence of it in an abundance of white. it’s a small room on the upper floor that deserves a peaceful solitude.

i like this figure myself a lot, hanging midair asleep. it adds to the peacefulness. i probably will use it more often when required. depending the number of people that are staying, the bunk bed can be lifted, so i had to take the height into account before painting it – which worked splendidly.

the double bed still has to be put in place: the angel is watching overhead. doors of shower and toilet need coating but that’s no longer a concern for me. overall i wanted the room to have an organic feel, a bit spartan perhaps but with a certain warmth. as the ceiling is of raw timber, i chose terracotta tiles for the floor. there’s a small window on the right which has a clear view for hundreds of yards.

the shower and toilet have chequered light and dark blue tiles, reflecting the figure’s striped uniform. a thin line of white and blue finishes it off. why that wasn’t done yet in the shower, i have no clue. deadlines elsewhere, i guess. and yes, it says Latrine and Brausebad above. you can figure out yourself where that comes from.

so there you go: i would have liked it as a bedroom or a study myself. sorry for the not so good pics. with a flashlight the colors always fuck up – hence why i never use it -, and because of the size of the room my camera couldn’t capture all. maybe someone else will someday.

STREIFENWALD

this poem will be hung in the room i designed for newly built castle ‘De Berckt’, and that i hopefully will finish this week. i got one – small - mural to go. i’m not sure, though, when the room will be furnished, although they already planned having guests in two weeks. i’ll be out of town myself, so unable to make pics right away.

nearby they’re building a large… well, i wouldn’t call it a hotel as it isn’t. you can’t stay there on your own or as a couple. it’s only meant for groups: conventions, presentations, parties etc. the pic above is taken from the back. in addition - behind the camera’s view - there’s a lawn just as big as the lot you see in front, and then there’s a second building – an old castle and later monastery - with a pond and connected moat behind the trees.

this is the main hall, one of two on the first floor, but at the front - on the right – they will build an even bigger one three times as large. it is situated in a very peaceful, rural area located near the river. much of the material used is second-hand or are leftovers from construction and demolition sites.

a couple of dozen artists were asked to fill a panel in the hall and at the same time to design one of thirty-two rooms located on the second and third floor; meaning painting the walls, choosing the tiles etc. to be done in collaboration with the builders that are working there of course. some of the artists i know, most i don’t. much freedom is granted and there isn’t really a deadline although it is planned to be ready in july.

‘you and me’, 160 x 96 cm.

i hadn’t painted in almost three years. all icons i made so far were small and on wood, but making this one really gave back the motion of creating. painting calmes me down in an noble way, like a robust barge pushing water. the effect is that during the process doors open – energetically in all ways.

part II will follow…
